I learned about architecture by watching the sandhill cranes.
Sitting beside an architect looking towards the final years of his career, quietly reflecting on the value of his work as a sole proprietor. I learned by listening to a busy firm principal in Chicago talk about the continued inspiration he found - even on the hardest days - from building safer, more welcoming primary schools. And I learned from the dedication and boldness of a group of planners and designers committed to the successful rejuventation of a downtown district - my own midwestern hometown.
As practice, architecture can hold all of these narratives and in the same instant so much more - it is nuanced, complex, and dynamic. At its best, architecture is an act of story AND of service - to people and to our one and singular earth. I am captivated by architecture because of these qualities - for I am a listener, and at my center I am a storyteller.

The opportunity to create, to tell stories through relationship, service, and physical materials proved a force field greater than I could ignore and it pulled me from my career in engineering. I’ve spent the last 3 years in graduate school, graduating with my MArch degree from UW this summer.
My technical background in engineering acts as a powerful backdrop to my second act in the architectural space. (you can read more about my background here.) However, design as practiced experiment is a lifelong adventure and I started it long before my formal introduction to architecture. But I’m a lot more than an engineer and a student of architecture. I’m a CrossFit coach, a writer, a burgeoning mountain bike enthusiast, and I’m most at home backpacking between rainclouds in the PNW. Best of all, I’m lucky enough to share abundant life with a devoted partner and two loving, joyful dogs.

Abstract: This thesis presents a future vision for the next iteration of the gas station. The gas station as it functions today is an important component of the U.S. infrastructure network. However, the current network is not resilient enough to withstand the effects of climate change and it does not adequately serve or respect the holistic needs of its users and the larger environment. While the adoption of the electric vehicle is one of the best next steps towards a cleaner, more robust infrastructure network, an extensive build-out of networked charging stations is critical to support this transition.
The existing network of gas stations across the U.S. can be reimagined in a manner that is respectful to the environment, builds upon what is already a community hub in many rural and suburban areas, and serves as a catalyst for the emerging EV infrastructure network. Through the speculative design of two gas stations, this thesis proposes a networked strategy and toolkit for the reinvention of the fueling network.
Balancing site-specific conditions against the need for a network application, the design proposal speaks to the unique needs of the surrounding landscape while presenting a flexible strategy for application across the expanding EV network. It defines an architectural method of system change that can support positive community and environmental health, while reinforcing the critical impact of everyday architecture.

Questioning permanence. Tucked into
the north slope of the Celio Hill, the Terra Wellness Center creates a space of
refuge in the historic urban center of Rome while delivering critical
community health resources to the city. In a time when the psychosocial
consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic are high, Terra provides important
services supportive of holistic wellbeing and a prominent public presence for
mental health advocacy.

As a “space
of healing”, the Terra Wellness Center focuses on a holistic response to mental
health. It features an exhibition space, a gathering hall for movement-based
activities, a health clinic with spa facilities, and a flexible art therapy
hall. As an architectural intervention, the structures are embedded into the
hillside, expressing a sense of rootedness, and exploring the principle of
excavation as a tactile metaphor for the importance of memory and self-expression along the journey of psychological healing.
	Spaces exist between
shifting planes, crafting a sense of gradual change across the landscape and
responding to one’s temporal relationship to the rich and layered history of
the site. Furthermore, utilizing the heavy materiality of raw earth and stone
creates a multisensory experience, cradling spaces of security and refuge
amidst the chaos of central Rome.
Embracing
holistic health at a community level and throughout a lifetime necessarily
exists along a transient spectrum. It underscores an understanding that
rootedness, acceptance, and belonging must arise despite the persistently
transitory nature of the surrounding environment — people, space, and
circumstance. Terra must contend with this reality within a similar question at
large, as the intervention utilizes traditional building materials in
contemporary forms to question the conception of permanence in a city where
permanence is best understood as paradoxical.

Design is for everyone. The Place for People Experiencing Homelessness’ (the PPEH)
mission is to provide a respite for people experiencing homelessness by
fostering joy, belonging, and a sense of renewal for all who enter. Inspired by
the long and life-giving tradition of water as an essential, yet often
undervalued resource, the PPEH is organized around a central water garden.
Celebrating the spirit of renewal, the central water garden acts as a vertical collector
of gathering spaces, of daylight, and flowing water. The garden is embraced by
blocks of care where multifaceted support is provided—from laundry facilities
to hot meals to medical care. The blocks are nestled under an enveloping roof,
where its outstretched eaves welcome guests as an accommodating expression of
protection.

Focusing inward, the circulation and programmed
spaces continuously relate to the central gathering garden, prioritizing the
importance of gathering with one another in community and the joy it can
nurture in our lives. Transparency and screening of the inner façade facing the
garden vary in response to the need for privacy at each of the program spaces.
The calming white noise of running water from the garden drifts through the
space, adding an auditory layer of privacy
and creating a
retreat from the stressful and chaotic conditions of life outside the PPEH’s
walls.

Additionally, quieter spaces are in the mezzanine, overlooking the more
open communal program spaces below. Material choices and environmental control
systems are also designed to promote a healthy and nurturing space, including
the incorporation of natural materials for finishes, ample ventilation, and an
additional air purification system. Recognizing the important act of renewal
and appreciating the water intensive nature of many of the institution’s
facilities, the building employs an extensive rainwater collection and reuse
network—where rainwater supplements irrigation, showers, and laundry
facilities, in addition to a greywater recycling network.

While
the PPEH cannot solve the crisis of homelessness on its own, the institution is
committed to providing support to each unique guest within a space designed to
foster rejuvenation, prioritize the life affirming act of gathering together,
and makes space for joy — an essential component of
embracing our collective humanity.

Design as experiment. Sculptural explorations in plaster explore the hierarchy and directionality of light and shadow. Following the light, the seeker moves downward from an open space of vulnerability to a place of security amidst the chaos and uncertainty just beyond the protective layers. The seeker can visit this place, but they cannot stay.
The layers, created of three interlocking forms, explore the complexity of the seams, the edges of form, and their impact on placemaking.
