Redefining program. Directly adjacent a busy transportation junction, the hub@othello serves as a community center for the Othello neighborhood. The playful design questions the rules of urban scales by introducing intimately scaled trays of shared social spaces - the ‘porches’. The small porches encapsulate a community backyard - allowing public gathering and private spaces to coexist. Creating a connection between the neighborhood streets to the east and the light rail
transportation center to the west, the backyard green space demarcates a pedestrian zone along the projects’ quieter axis, creating a flexible outdoor room for farmers markets and ever-popular outdoor movies. First floor programming includes commercial space and the home of a popular neighborhood coffee shop. Interior spaces reference the trays of porches, always orienting space and line of sight towards the central gathering yard.
