UW Neighborhood Design Build Studio, 2021
Giving life to design. South Whidbey Tilth is a non-profit
promoting sustainable and equitable agricultural practices. The 2021 UW Neighborhood
Design Build studio constructed a roadside farm stand for the organization to widen
access to fresh produce for their community. Considering the client’s goals and budget, the
farm stand design prioritizes the site’s local ecology, is accessible, and
utilizes local materials that require minimal maintenance.
The cedar structure
is constructed entirely of 2x2 lumber to minimize costs, minimizes ground contact
foundation points to reduce site impacts, and quarter minus gravel for surfaces
to allow ADA access and maximum drainage for the farm. A team of ten graduate
and undergraduate students designed and built the farmstand in 10 weeks with guidance
from professors Steve Badanes and Jake LaBarre.
